L’Historische Grammatik der bildenden Kunste est une synthese de la pensee d’Alois Riegl (1858-1905) dont il constitue l’ouverture methodologique a la fois la plus concise et la plus explicite. Par l’introduction du concept de Kunstwollen, Riegl a cree une methode de reflexion tres originale dont lui furent redevables nombre d’estheticiens du XXe siecle, parmi les plus grands. Par Kunstwollen il entend une force de l’esprit humain donnant naissance aux affinites formelles d’une meme epoque, dans toutes ses manifestations culturelles. Cettevolonte artistique et ses variations sont conditionnees par la vision du monde laquelle nait de la religion et de la pensee scientifique fondamentale. Riegl interprete donc l’histoire de l’art comme une histoire de l’esprit (Kunstgeschichte als Geistesgeschichte). Nul n’etait mieux qualifie, pour presenter cette oeuvre au public francais, qu’Otto Pacht, disciple spirituel de Riegl, et editeur avec K. M. Swoboda de cet ouvrage posthume demeure longtemps inedit.
