Marino Barlezio, scutarino, primo storico di Albania, nelle due opere De Obsidione Scodrensi (1504) e De vita et gestis Scanderbegi (1510 ca.) racconto le vicende di cui il suo Paese fu protagonista nel secondo Quattrocento, fino alla presa di Scutari nel 1478, ed esse furono una fonte cui attinse nei secoli successivi la storiografia europea. Gli stessi cronisti ottomani non mancarono di descrivere la conquista di Scutari – da loro chiamata Iskenderiye, cioe Citta di Alessandro Magno – come il passo decisivo personale di Maometto II per realizzare il progetto di sottomissione della rimanente parte dell’Europa. Il libro presenta uno sconosciuto primissimo testo di Barlezio, De bello scodrensi, ritrovato dopo lunghe ricerche, lo inquadra nel contesto storico, ne ricostruisce le fasi redazionali. Invita altresi alla conoscenza di un memorabile evento bellico che non fu questione esclusivamente albanese o veneta, ma si pone come momento chiave nelle vicende di un conflitto che, deflagrato con la caduta di Costantinopoli, avrebbe mantenuto l’Europa in uno stato di permanente inquietudine.
