JHWH und die Unterwelt
Spuren einer Kompetenzausweitung JHWHs im Alten Testament

English summary: The Old Testament connects the God of Israel with the underworld in very different ways. Whereas the underworld seems to be a place which is completely remote from God in some texts, in other passages it is seen as something into which the power of God extends effectively. Gonke Eberhardt describes four parallel developments in Israel’s religious history within whose context the understanding of God and the underworld changed: ranging from JHWH as a God who literally has no contact with death and the underworld to a God whose realm of power also includes the underworld and who leads into the underworld and then out again. For this thesis, the author was awarded the 2007 Lucas Prize for Young Scholars. German description: Das Alte Testament setzt auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise den Gott Israels mit der Unterwelt in Verbindung. Wahrend in einigen Texten das Totenreich als Ort der absoluten Gottesferne erscheint, wird es an anderen Stellen als etwas verstanden, in das die Macht Gottes wirksam hineinreicht. Eine jungere Interpretation dieser verschiedenen Darstellungen ist in der religionsgeschichtlichen Forschung die These von der ‘Kompetenzausweitung’ JHWHs, d.h. von der sukzessiven Ausweitung des Zustandigkeitsbereichs des Gottes Israels auf die Unterwelt. Gonke Eberhardt uberpruft und modifiziert diese These anhand mehrerer zentraler Texte aus dem Alten Testament mit Blick auf seine altorientalische Umwelt und die archaologischen Zeugnisse der Epoche. Sie beschreibt vier teilweise interdependente Entwicklungen in der Religionsgeschichte Israels, in deren Rahmen sich das Verstandnis von Gott und Unterwelt veranderte. Die ersten beiden Entwicklungen betreffen die Vorstellungen zum Verhaltnis zwischen Gott und Kosmos, bei den anderen beiden steht das Verhaltnis von Gott und Mensch im Vordergrund. Neben diesen vier Entwicklungen bleibt jedoch auch die Vorstellung von der Gottesferne des Totenreichs oder der Toten bis in die nachexilische Zeit nachweisbar, und die Frage nach einer den Tod uberdauernden oder nach ihm erneuerten Gottesgemeinschaft fuhrt in den zeitgenossischen Texten weiterhin zu unterschiedlichen Antworten. Die Dissertation wurde mit dem Lucas-Nachwuchswissenschaftlerpreis 2007 ausgezeichnet.
