Old Testament lament is more than prayer in the face of suffering. It is also self-reflection and a purposeful challenge to God and human beings. In this study, Anja Marschall shows that when praying, people critically examine their expression of suffering; lament becomes an appropriation of prayer language and of scope for thought and action.

Anja Marschall untersucht Reflexionspassagen in Klagetexten innerhalb des Psalters (Ps 42-43; 44; 88) und des Hiobbuches (Hiob 3-19). Sie stellt heraus, dass die Gattung der Klage nicht erst im Hiobbuch zum Medium existenzieller Reflexion abstrahiert wird, sondern bereits in einigen Psalmen kognitiver Auseinandersetzung Raum gibt. Leidensausdruck in der Form und Sprache der Klage ermoglicht eine kritische Reflexion der eigenen Identitat, des Gottesbildes und der sozialen Stellung. Indem sich die Betenden mit ihrem Klageausdruck auseinandersetzen, eignen sie sich neue Denk- und Handlungsspielraume an. Diese bilden sich im weiteren Verlauf des Gebets ab. Sie zeugen sowohl von einer vielgestaltigen Linderung des Leidens im Zuge des Gebets als auch von zielgerichteten Gebetsentscheidungen durch Aneignungsprozesse, die zu einer Vielfalt von Gebetsverlaufen jenseits von Formzwang fuhren.
