Armand Puig i Tàrrech sums up a lifetime of research. Following the central episodes of Jesus’ life – from baptism through the parables to the Last Supper and the resurrection – he reads the canonical Gospels as narratives in which history and theology are interwoven, bringing the reader one step closer to the historical Jesus.
Critical research on the historical Jesus began 250 years ago with Lessing’s edition of Reimarus’s Fragments. It has since passed through several phases, most recently the Third Quest, with its social-historical interest and its emphasis on Jesus’ Jewishness. Armand Puig i Tàrrech opens a new path at the crossroads the Third Quest has produced.
Two issues must be held together there in tension. First, Jesus’ history remains inaccessible unless historical research includes his “theologal” relationship with God. Second, access to the history of Jesus is likewise impossible if critical investigation of the historical sources, according to the criterion of historical plausibility formulated by Gerd Theissen, is abandoned. His integrative approach takes up the central question of interpretation: the relationship between the “social” or “contextual” and the “theologal,” Jesus’ theological function. The volume rearranges essays from several decades to trace Jesus’ journey along the mysteria vitae Christi, a thread in the tradition since the second century. The key episodes of his life build a narrative history interwoven with the theological features that make it intelligible.
The approach rests on a premise: the separation of faith and history that Lessing proposed in the name of reason does not fit the canonical Gospels, the earliest and most reliable writings on the historical Jesus; they are written from the intersection of history and faith. Integrating theology, history, and narrativity, the author brings the reader one step closer to him.
