In schweren Tagen
Texte und Quellen zu den Uiguren Kasachstans
by Michael Reinhard Hess
English Summary: The Uighurs are a Turkic people, the majority of whom now live in the People’s Republic of China. Their number is estimated at over ten million. There are also Uighurs living outside China. Of these, most (about a quarter of a million) live in Kazakhstan. Linguistically, they differ little from the Uighurs of China, but are more influenced by Russian culture. This volume provides an introduction to the culture and literature of Kazakh Uighurs. It contains two types of text: previously unpublished and original texts recorded during a field research project, and classical texts taken from modern Kazakh-Uighur literature. Each text is translated into German and is made accessible through explanatory notes and comments. Additionally, the texts from the field research project appear in their original form together with a transcript. The texts selected cover a cross section of Kazakh-Uighur culture, providing an insight into everyday life, as well as the school system, Uighur history, literature and folklore.
