Die Vita Heinrich Altings stellt eine fruhneuzeitliche Bildungsbiografie mit spannungsgeladenen Elementen und bedrohlichen Momenten dar. Dem kurfurstlichen Haus der Wittelsbacher in Heidelberg verdankte er den sozialen Aufstieg und die Begegnung mit fuhrenden Personlichkeiten der reformiert-transkontinentalen Welt. Nicht zuletzt war sein Zogling Friedrich V., der “Winterkonig”, eine schicksalhafte Figur, wie Alting selbst einraumt, im Rahmen der Formierung und des Zerfalls einer religios-politisch motivierten Union und ihrer Expansion und Implosion. Es handelte sich fur den friesischen Pastorensohn und reformierten Gelehrten um eine res publica litteraria im Wandel, die ihm Zugang zu namhaften Universitaten und wichtigen hofischen Anlassen verschaffte, aber auch seine Existenz und die seiner Angehorigen massiv bedrohen konnte. Der Ausbruch des Dreissigjahrigen Krieges beforderte ihn ins Exil in die Niederlande. Dort entstanden seine Spatschriften von nachhaltiger Bedeutung.
