La typologie des langues est aujourd’hui une dicipline en plein essor. Ce volume reunit les articles les plus importants produits par l’auteur au cours de quelque vingt-cinq ans d’exploration des langues les plus diverses. Ces etudes abordent quelques questions fondamentales: nature des categories grammaticales, classes de mots, syntaxe de la proposition, definition du sujet et de l’objet, temps, aspect et mode, articulation theme-rheme, quete des universaux, problemes methodologiques et terminologiques. L’option theorique se situe resolument dans la tradition saussurienne et s’inspire de la pensee d’Emile Benveniste. Dans cet esprit, l’article initial, d’orientation epistemologique, presente la typologie comme une voie susceptible de rapprocher la linguistique du statut d’une veritable science. Gilbert Lazard est professeur honoraire a la Sorbonne et membre de l’Institut. Ses travaux se partagent entre l’etude des langues iraniennes et la linguistique generale. Il est notamment l’auteur d’une Grammaire du persan contemporain, d’un ouvrage sur L’actance et, en collaboration, d’une description de la Structure de la langue tahitienne.
