Wie die Bestattungsfunde aus dem mittleren Palaolithikum belegen, zeigte bereits der Neandertaler eine Art von religiosem Empfinden. Ein symbolischer Formenschatz wird allerdings erst mit den Kunstobjekten des oberen Palaolithikums augenfallig. Aus diesen ersten Ansatzen entwickelt sich im Neolithikum rasch eine Vielzahl hochst differenzierter Religionen, in denen zunachst die Gestalt einer mythischen Urmutter und die Verehrung der Toten im Mittelpunkt stehen. Erst mit den Kulturen des spaten Neolithikums werden eigentliche Gottergestalten greifbar. Auf der Basis eines evolutionistischen Ansatzes werden die fruhesten Spuren religiosen Empfindens im Palaolithikum ebenso behandelt wie die Ursprunge des neolithischen Weltbildes in Anatolien und das Vordringen dieser charakteristischen Ackerbauernreligion uber den Balkan nach Europa. Deren Differenzierung und Weiterentwicklung fuhrt letztlich zu den Religionen, die sich in den megalithischen Bauwerken des spaten und ausgehenden Neolithikums spiegeln.
