Der Band Orthodoxes Christentum erschliesst die vielfaltigen Traditionen der drittgrossten christlichen Konfession auf innovative Weise: Diese Erschliessung geschieht & wie es fur die Bande dieser religionswissenschaftlichen Reihe ublich ist & von einer “Aussenperspektive”. Zudem werden die facettenreichen Traditionen aus multidimensionaler Perspektive interdisziplinar betrachtet. Ein derartiger Zugang war uberfallig und erweist sich als sehr fruchtbar, da er an diesem hochkomplexen religiosen Gebilde noch unbekannte Seiten aufzeigen kann. Denn das Orthodoxe Christentum wird durch eine Vielzahl autokephaler und autonomer Kirchen der byzantinischen Tradition reprasentiert, deren Wurzeln weit in die Vergangenheit zuruckreichen. Zugleich haben die Kirchen eigene Entwicklungspfade beschritten und sind uberregional verbreitet: zunachst und vornehmlich in Ost- und Sudosteuropa, aber auch im Vorderen Orient und seit dem Beginn der Neuzeit weltweit. Dieser Sammelband schliesst so eine grosse Forschungslucke und schafft durch eine systematische und analytische Herangehensweise einen Uberblick uber die zunehmend interdisziplinare Forschung zum Orthodoxen Christentum jenseits theologisch-konfessioneller oder historischer Ostkirchenkunde, u. a. aus philosophischer, psychologischer, ethnologischer, geopolitischer, literaturwissenschaftlicher und postkolonialer Perspektive. Er bietet daruber hinaus Hintergrundinformationen zur Rolle der Orthodoxie in den aktuellen Konfliktregionen Ost- und Sudosteuropas.
