Modern English language has mostly been shaped by two major influences: the works of Shakespeare and the ‘Authorized Version of the Bible’ (AV) from 1611 (also ‘King James Version’ or ‘King James Bible’), still the most prevalent version in the English-speaking world. This volume presents both a concise examination of the origins of the AV and its precursors and a comprehensive overview of its linguistic characteristics. Dabei wird die Sprache der AV auf den Betrachtungsebenen Typographie, Graphie und Interpunktion, Morphologie, Syntax und Wortschatz erortert. Die wichtigsten Unterschiede zum heutigen, aber auch zum zeitgenossischen Englisch werden anhand von Beispielen aus dem Bibeltext dargestellt und erklart. Daruber hinaus gibt der Band einen vollstandigen Uberblick uber die verbluffend grosse Zahl an Sprichwortern und Redewendungen, die aus der Bibelsprache stammen und Teil der englischen Alltagssprache geworden sind.
