Angesichts der manifesten Bedeutung religioser Konzepte fur die amerikanische Geschichte und Kultur untersucht die Studie den Einfluss der biblischen Parabel vom Verlorenen Sohn (Luk 15:11-31) auf literarische Werke, politische Rhetorik, Musik und Folk Art Amerikas von Beginn der puritanischen Besiedlung bis zur Gegenwart. In einer literarisch und theologisch ausgerichteten differentialen Analyse wird zunachst das generative Potential bestimmt – jenes Bundel von Eigenschaften, das Autoren zur Adaption oder Parodie verlockt bzw. zu Anspielungen, Zitaten, Figurenparallelen, Titelubernahmen und Motivverwandtschaften. In den intertextuellen und intermedialen Einzeluntersuchungen wird gefragt, inwiefern die Parabel fur bestimmte Phasen der amerikanischen Zivilisation als Matrix zur Konstituierung individueller und kollektiver Identitat und zur Deutung gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen fungiert.
