Die Studie untersucht die Darstellung der Sklaverei von der Vorburgerkriegszeit bis zur Civil Rights-Bewegung der 1960er Jahre in Romanen von Harriet Beecher Stowe, Herman Melville, Mark Twain, George W. Cable, William Faulkner and William Styron. Den theoretischen Rahmen bilden die Sklavereiforschung, Konzeptionen der historischen und kulturellen Alteritat sowie das Modell der Fiktionalitat als kontextbezogener Problemlosungsstrategie. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Thematisierung der Sklaverei einen sich historisch wandelnden Bezugsrahmen darstellt, innerhalb dessen jeweils aktuelle kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Probleme – wie die Segregation oder die Verdrangung der Geschichte im Suden – inszeniert und verwandelt werden. Gleichzeitig bildet die Sklaverei kontinuierlich einen Bezugspunkt, uber den das historische Selbstverstandnis der USA kritisch reflektiert wird. Die Widerspruche der Moderne werden sichtbar; die Kritik lasst sich jedoch nur innerhalb eines in der Moderne ausgebildeten Werterahmens begrunden.
