In der Sprachursprungsforschung ist lange die Ansicht vertreten worden, es gebe eine vorrangige Verbindung zwischen Laut und Sprache. Im Lichte neuerer Befunde – etwa der Palaontologie, der Evolutionaren Anthropologie sowie der Gesten- und Gebardensprachforschung – spricht allerdings Einiges dafur, dass sich das lautsprachliche System der menschlichen Sprache erst am Ende einer langen evolutionaren Beziehungsgeschichte gegen das gestisch-visuelle System durchsetzte: Sprache entwickelte sich nicht aus der Stimmlichkeit, sondern von Handgesten und sie wechselte zur stimmlichen Modalitat erst relativ spat in der Evolution der Hominiden (Michael C. Corballis). Muss also nicht Stimmlichkeit, sondern sichtbares Gebarden als Basis fur die Evolution der menschlichen Sprache angesehen werden? Diese Hypothese hat einige Plausibilitat gewonnen, wie Ludwig Jager einleuchtend zeigt.
