Martin Luthers Verhaltnis zum Humanismus wird vielfach nur durch die Brille seines Streits mit Erasmus von Rotterdam um den freien Willen gesehen. Tatsachlich hat Luther bei der Entwicklung seiner reformatorischen Theologie nicht zuletzt von Erasmus selbst profitiert: In seinen philologischen Studien griff er auf die Werke der grossen Humanisten seiner Zeit zuruck, in der offentlichen Debatte um die Judenbucher stand er aufseiten der Humanisten. Zeitweise hat er, etwa in der Heidelberger Disputation 1518, versucht, seine Anliegen in enger Allianz mit den humanistischen zu formulieren. Und in seinen Schriften uber die Schule gibt er sich als Anhanger humanistischer Ideale zu erkennen. So wird man nach Lekture dieser Studie Luther eher als Teil der humanistischen Bewegung einordnen denn als ihren Gegner.
