Der Papyrus Berlin P.23040 ist eine stark fragmentierte Handschrift, von der Reste von wenigstens 13 Kolumnen erhalten sind. Aufgrund palaographischer Kriterien ist er in die fruhptolemaische Zeit zu datieren, etwa zwischen 300 und 240 v. Chr. Herkunftsort ist aufgrund textexterner wie textinterner Indizien wahrscheinlich die Insel Elephantine. Die starken Zerstorungen und der teilweise unbekannte Wortschatz erschweren die Ubersetzung des Textes ebenso wie eine sichere Deutung seiner Bestimmung. Sicher ist, dass es sich um ein Klagelied an einen ungenannten Gott, moglicherweise Chnum von Elephantine, handelt. Im ersten Teil wird sehr detailliert die Zerstorung eines Tempels (des Chnum von Elephantine?) durch Feinde geschildert, im zweiten wird der Gott in zahlreichen Wendungen aufgefordert, diese ebenfalls anonym bleibenden Feinde zu vernichten. Da der Papyrus ausserdem ein Palimpsest und damit sicher ein Privat- und kein Archiv-Exemplar war, liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass es sich um eine von Priestern, moglicherweise Angehorigen der lokalen Chnumpriesterschaft, verfasste Widerstandsschrift gegen Fremdherrschaft handelt. Aufgrund interner Kriterien sind vor allem die persischen Eroberer Agyptens als Adressaten in Betracht zu ziehen.
