Sebastian Fink asks how language influences thought and tries to determine whether there is a method which allows us to draw conclusions about thought by looking at a linguistic structure. In order to do this he starts by looking at philosophers and philologists who have dealt extensively with the connection between language and thought. The result is a catalog of theories on the influence of language on thought which – at least in theory – can be applied to any individual language. An attempt to apply these theories to the Sumerian language makes up the final part of the publication in which it attempts to show in how far this approach to language as a source for intellectual history can prove useful. For readers without previous knowledge of Ancient Near Eastern Studies the title provides some introductory remarks on cuneiform, on the controversy surrounding lexical lists and on Sumerian grammar. Die Auswahl reicht von Wilhelm von Humboldt und Benjamin Lee Whorf bis zu weniger bekannten Autoren wie Hermann Usener, Friedrich Kainz und Adolf Stohr. Diese Riege der Sprachphilosophen wird durch eine Diskussion der altorientalistischen Arbeiten von Benno Landsberger und Wolfram von Soden abgerundet, die konkrete Aussagen zum Einfluss der Sprache auf das Denken der Sumerer und Akkader machten. Es wird also nicht auf eine moglichst vollstandige Behandlung aller Autoren abgezielt, die etwas uber das Verhaltnis von Sprache und Denken gesagt haben, sondern es wird versucht, solche Autoren herauszugreifen, die konkrete Hinweise auf den Zusammenhang von Sprache und Denken bieten. Das Destillat der Behandlung dieser Autoren ist ein Katalog von Thesen uber den Einfluss der Sprache auf Denken, die – zumindest theoretisch – auf jede Einzelsprache angewandt werden konnen. Fur Leser ausserhalb des engen Kreises der Altorientalistik bietet das Buch einige einfuhrende Bemerkungen zur Keilschrift, zu den kontrovers diskutierten lexikalischen Listen und zur Grammatik des Sumerischen. Der Versuch der Anwendung der erarbeiteten Thesen auf das Sumerische bildet den letzten Teil des Buches und soll zeigen, inwiefern sich dieser Zugang zur Sprache als Quelle fur die Geistesgeschichte bewahrt.
