Late Antiquity was, without doubt, one of the most fascinating periods in history. German description: Ohne Zweifel war die von tiefgreifenden politischen, religiosen und okonomischen Umwalzungen gepragte Spatantike eine der faszinierendsten Epochen der Menschheitsgeschichte. Die Ereignisse und Veranderungen im und rund um den Mittelmeerraum vom Ende des 3. bis zum 7. Jahrhundert schufen das Fundament fur eine neue Epoche, die wir gemeinhin “Mittelalter” nennen. Hier entstand die politische und kulturelle Trennung der ‘Alten Welt’ in ein christliches Abendland und ein muslimisches Morgenland, die bis heute unvermindert unsere Wahrnehmung bestimmt. Forscher unterschiedlichster Disziplinen kamen vom 7. bis 9.7.2011 in Munster zusammen, um Agypten, eine der reichsten Provinzen Roms an der Schnittstelle zwischen Europa, Afrika und Asien, die uns eine Fulle von archaologischen Dokumenten und Denkmalern auch aus der Spatantike hinterlassen hat, gewissermassen von “innen” und “aussen” in den untersuchenden Blick zu nehmen. Der von Frank Feder und Angelika Lohwasser herausgegebene Tagungsband veroffentlicht die Ergebnisse und Erkenntnisse dieser multidisziplinaren Tagung und vermittelt einen umfassenden Einblick in die kulturelle Situation des ostlichen Mittelmeerraumes in der Spatantike mit Fokus auf Agypten.
