Peter Abaelard (1079-1142) ist einer der bedeutendsten Philosophen und Theologen des 12. Jahrhunderts. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren stehen Fragen der Schrifthermeneutik und Exegese zunehmend im Zentrum seiner Theologie. Im Austausch mit Heloise, der Abtissin des Klosters Paraklet, definiert Abaelard ein wissenschaftliches Bibelstudium als eigentliche “Arbeit” der Nonnen im Sinne der Benediktsregel nach dem Vorbild der asketisch lebenden Frauen um Hieronymus. Abaelards “Expositio in Hexaemeron”, ursprunglich fur den Paraklet verfasst und dann fur den Unterricht uberarbeitet, ist vor diesem Hintergrund zu lesen. Fur die ad-litteram-Exegese der biblischen Schopfungsberichte in Gen 1-2 rezipiert Abaelard nicht nur die Kirchenvater, sondern ebenso judische Auslegungstraditionen. Der Wahrheitsanspruch der Schrift steht in besonderer Weise in der Auseinandersetzung mit der zeitgenossischen Naturphilosophie (Wilhelm von Conches, Thierry von Chartres) auf dem Prufstand.
