Monastische Theologie im Dialog mit demNeo-Platonismus des 12. Jahrhunderts

Isaak von Etoile (ca. 1110-1174/75) gilt als der “spekulativste Kopf seines Ordens” (Kurt Ruh), zugleich aber auch als das “groae Geheimnis von Citeaux” (Louis Bouyer). Isaak von Etoile war eine der profiliertesten Personlichkeiten der Zisterziensermystik, die einen der Hohepunkte der abendlandischen Spiritualitatsgeschichte darstellt. Zugleich kann der mutmaaliche Schuler Abaelards, Wilhelms von Conches und Gilberts de la Porree auch als ein Exponent des Platonismus der sog. “Schule von Chartres” gesehen werden. Diese philosophische Gruppierung steht fur das Erwachen des kritischen Intellekts im Rahmen der sog. Renaissance des 12. Jh. anhand von Fragestellungen, die durch Platons Timaios aufgeworfen worden waren. Dabei wird aber keineswegs auf die Anwendung des Instrumentariums der aristotelischen Logik verzichtet. Wichtig ist bei Isaak von Etoile auch die Rezeption der negativen und mystischen Gotteslehre des Dionysius Areopagita. Anhand einer sorgfaltigen Analyse seiner philosophischen und theologischen Schriften – De anima, De canone missae und nicht zuletzt des monumentalen Werks der Sermones – werden zentrale Themenkomplexe herausgearbeitet wie die Methodenlehre, die Bibelhermeneutik, die philosophische Gotteslehre, die Anthropologie, die Erbsunden- und Gnadenlehre und schliealich die Mystik, die die Seinsmystik Meister Eckharts in einigen Punkten vorwegzunehmen scheint. Isaaks Entwurf einer Metaphysik der Seele hatte im Rahmen der Scholastik noch einige Diskussionen zur Folge, insbesondere seine Lehre von der Identitat der Seele mit ihren Fakultaten betreffend, die sich als eine philosophische Formulierung der Lehre von der Gottebenbildlichkeit verstand.
