Selbststand, Verantwortung und christlicher Glaube bei Bernhard von Clairvaux

Als Eugen III. am 15. Februar 1145 zum Papst gewahlt wird, uberfordert ihn die Vielzahl an Aufgaben. Bernhard von Clairvaux verfasst auf seinen Wunsch hin als letztes vollendetes Werk den Traktat De consideratione. Bisher wurde dieser in der Forschung jedoch hauptsachlich als Papstspiegel wahrgenommen, der eine Anleitung zu einem gelingenden Pontifikat sein will. Die vorliegende Arbeit weist dagegen auf, dass es Bernhard um viel mehr geht, als einen “Ratgeber fur Papste” zu schreiben: Aus De consideratione lasst sich eine Anthropologie entnehmen, die Bernhards grundlegende Einsichten aus seinem eigenen Leben zwischen Ruhe und Engagement konzentriert zusammenfasst. Auf sein umfangreiches Gesamtwerk gestutzt, entfaltet diese Untersuchung Bernhards anthropologisches Grundverstandnis, das den Menschen schon immer in vier unhintergehbaren Dimensionen wahrnimmt. In ihnen muss sich der Mensch vollziehen, zu ihnen muss er sich verhalten, wenn er verantwortlich handeln will. Die Kardinaltugenden leisten dabei einen wichtigen Beitrag, um den Menschen in seine eigene Mitte zu fuhren, konnen den Menschen jedoch nicht dauerhaft zum Stand in sich anleiten. Wirkliche Konsistenz ist fur Bernhard erst dann erreichbar, wenn sich der Mensch im Glauben fur Gott offnet. Dieser umfasst die menschlichen Dimensionen in sich und verhindert, dass sich der Mensch in ihnen verliert. Erst indem der Mensch seinen Halt in Gott sucht, kann er in sich Stand finden: Denn nur so ist er in der Lage, die Fixierung auf sich selbst aufzugeben und ganz er selbst zu sein. Deshalb lasst sich von einer relationalen Anthropologie bei Bernhard sprechen.
