Within the framework of a symposium held by the Department of Classical Studies in Salzburg in October 2011, an international panel of experts addressed various aspects related to the theme of the “market” from Roman antiquity to present times. Given the diversity of current academic perspectives, both the understanding of the free market economy and markets in terms of a theoretical economic model, as well as the interpretation of rich, and in some areas still unexplored source material were taken into account. The papers in the corresponding conference proceedings “Kauf, Konsum und Markte” (buying, consumption and markets), edited by Monika Frass, cover subjects such as people, markets, disasters as well as consumption, production, distribution, the role of auctions and many others.

English summary: Within the framework of a symposium held by the Department of Classical Studies in Salzburg in October 2011, an international panel of experts addressed various aspects related to the theme of the “market” from Roman antiquity to present times. Thanks to the participation of representatives of various historical disciplines and areas of modern economics, the significance of “market research” from antiquity to the present is highlighted and its current topicality clearly emphasized.
