Over time, what began as a conflict over religious education in one German federal state became a documentation of the transformation of society, politics, religion and the churches. In the course of the debate, not only societal circumstances changed through reunification, migration and the alleged return of religion. The object and participants of the debate changed, too. At the height of the controversy, the question of what role religion should play in society and the legal and political consequences of possible answers to that question were the subject of fundamental debate throughout the whole of Germany.
