English summary: Especially in earlier research not much attention has been paid to Johannine ethics. Karl Weyer-Menkhoff takes on this traditional consensus. He aims to show how deeply the Gospel of John, which since time immemorial has been considered the ‘spiritual gospel’ (Clemens of Alexandria), is actually also permeated by the concept of the deed. The key research question revolves around what kind of moral thinking the Gospel of John promotes. The answer is that it is neither the principles nor the rules nor the values inherent in human deeds. Johannine ethics are instead rooted in the words and deeds of God. In this way and in its narratives the Gospel of John provides a comprehensive foundation for morality itself. In this context, the commandment to love appears not as a sparse remainder of early Christian ethics, but as the culmination of an often enigmatic narrative underpinning of human deeds.
