Werner Sundermanns zentraler Forschungsgegenstand waren die in Berlin aufbewahrten mitteliranischen Textfragmente aus der Turfanoase in Ostturkistan, der heutigen Uigurischen Autonomen Region Xinjiang, China. Seine Texteditionen stellte er stets in einen philologischen, sprach- oder religionshistorischen Rahmen. Die daraus hervorgegangenen Erkenntnisse haben sich weit uber die Iranistik hinaus auch auf die Religionsgeschichte Zentralasiens, die iranische und indogermanistische Sprach- und Literaturgeschichte sowie auf die Turkologie und Buddhismuskunde erstreckt. Die Gedenkschrift enthalt uber funfzig Beitrage von renommierten internationalen, Werner Sundermann verbundenen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus Manichaologie, Iranistik und Zentralasienkunde sowie weiteren benachbarten Fachgebieten. Die Forschungsthemen reichen vom Beginn unserer Zeitrechnung bis in die Gegenwart hinein und spiegeln die groae fachliche Breite des Lebenswerkes von Werner Sundermann wider. Es werden neue Textfragmente aus der Turfan-Region, aus Dunhuang und Iran ediert, Verbindungen zwischen den Quellen zentralasiatischer Herkunft und der griechisch-romischen bzw. persischen Kulturraume untersucht und einzelne sprach- oder religionswissenschaftliche Phanomene analysiert.
