Welfen Sammeln Durer
edited by Klaus Niehr and Judith Tralles
English summary: Hardly any other artist has experienced such an intense afterlife as the Nuremberg painter and graphic artist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). Already during his lifetime, but increasingly after his death, the person and the work were the subject of passionate veneration and discussion. During the early modern period, Durer was considered a brilliant artist par excellence far beyond the German-speaking area, who became a model for posterity with his pictures, woodcuts, copperplate engravings and textbooks.Due to the numerous writings and works of art collected here, Braunschweig and Wolfenbuttel are important places of Durer’s reception.Numerous works of art, writings and objects that deal with the person and life of the artist, the circumstances of their acquisition and their staging reflect the high esteem for the Nuremberg master, who was stylized as one of the most important representatives of national culture.
