English summary: Alchemy opens up a fascinating field of theory and practice. Till now, it has been chiefly famous in cultural memory for the attempt to produce gold from lead, but it also united two fundamental concepts: on the one hand, alchemy operated on the the notion of a holy nature, dotted with signs that point beyond themselves but remain connected with each other, which humans have approached in awe and reverence; on the other hand, a research interest that isolates its elements, dissects and investigates them with a goal of uncovering their empirical operations and connections to each other and, in so doing, to discover the hidden structures of the material world. If it was not able to turn lead into gold or the formula of immortality, alchemical laboratories paved the way for chemistry. The quest for the “philosophers stone” also led to practical developments in mining, metallurgy, and ceramics which are still used today. It is not just the distillation of alcohol that originates in alchemical pursuits, but alchemists also discovered sulfuric and nitric acids as well as ammonia and the development of porcelain in Europe would not have been possible without alchemical laboratories. The exhibit “Golden Knowledge” displays a wide array of texts and pictorial sources from 300 years of the history of alchemy derived from the rich holdings of the Herzog August Bibliothek, beginning with illuminated manuscripts from the early 15th century, the exhibit ends with the 18th century, as the rational-objective approach to the world was establishing itself. The exhibit runs from August 31st, 2014 to February 22nd, 2015 in the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbuttel. German description: Die Alchemie eroffnet ein faszinierendes Wissensfeld der Theorie und der Praxis. Bis heute ist sie vor allem als Goldmacherei im kulturellen Gedachtnis lebendig geblieben, doch vereint sie zwei an sich grundverschiedene Konzepte: einerseits die Vorstellung einer heiligen Natur, durchdrungen von uber sich selbst hinausweisenden und miteinander in Beziehung stehenden Zeichen, der sich der Mensch mit Ehrfurcht zu nahern hat; andererseits ein forschendes Interesse, das ihre Elemente isoliert, prapariert und operierend empirisch ihre Beziehungen untereinander aufdeckt mit dem Ziel, den Aufbau der materiellen Welt zu durchschauen.Wenn es auch nicht gelingen konnte, Blei zu Gold zu veredeln oder die Formel der Unsterblichkeit zu finden, bahnten sich in alchemischen Laboratorien Wege zur Chemie. Die Suche nach dem Stein der Weisen fuhrte in Bergbau, Metallurgie und Topferei zu heute noch wirksamen praktischen Entdeckungen: Nicht nur die Destillation von Alkohol geht auf alchemische Versuche zuruck; Alchemiker entdeckten Schwefel- und Salpetersaure sowie Ammoniak; und auch die Erfindung des Porzellans in Europa ware ohne das alchemische Laboratorium nicht moglich gewesen. Die Ausstellung Goldenes Wissen zeigt aus dem reichen Fundus der Herzog August Bibliothek in reprasentativer Breite Text- und Bildquellen aus 300 Jahren Alchemiegeschichte: Beginnend mit illuminierten Handschriften aus dem fruhen 15.Jahrhundert, endet sie mit dem 18.?Jahrhundert, als sich der rational-objektive Zugang zur Welt fest zu etablieren beginnt. Die Ausstellung ist vom 31. August 2014 bis zum 22. Februar 2015 in der Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbuttel zu sehen.
