Im Jahre 1010 legte Bischof Bernward von Hildesheim den Grundstein fur die Errichtung der Michaeliskirche, einer der bedeutendsten Kirchenbauten des Fruhmittelalters. Das zugehorige Kloster stattete er reich mit Gutern und uberaus wertvollen Buchern fur Liturgie und Gebet aus. Einen Schatz im Himmel und das Seelenheil wollte er sich damit erwerben, wie auch viele andere Hildesheimer Bischofe und Kanoniker nach ihm. Bernwards personlichen Psalter konnte die Herzog August Bibliothek im Jahre 2007 erwerben. Dies und das tausendjahrige Jubilaum der Hildesheimer Michaeliskirche geben den Anlass fur die Ausstellung “Schatze im Himmel – Bucher auf Erden. Mittelalterliche Handschriften aus Hildesheim”. Kostbar illuminierte Handschriften sowie zahlreiche Bucher der Michaelismonche und der mittelalterlichen Dombibliothek sind vom 5. September 2010 bis zum 27. Februar 2011 in der Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbuttel zu sehen. Die Bandbreite der vorgestellten Handschriften reicht von der Grundungsphase bis zur Blute der Buchproduktion und zum Beitritt des Michaelisklosters zur Reformbewegung der Bursfelder Kongregation im 15. Jahrhundert. Es werden nicht nur alle bernwardinischen Prachthandschriften, sondern auch weitere Glanzpunkte wie die beruhmten Schwesterhandschriften des Ratmann-Sakramentars und des Stammheimer Missale (um 1170) prasentiert. Der von Monika Muller herausgegebene reich bebilderte Ausstellungskatalog beschreibt ausfuhrlich die Exponate. Die zahlreichen Essays behandeln wichtige Aspekte der mittelalterlichen Buchkultur und zentrale geistesgeschichtliche Entwicklungen wie das Bildungssystem der Kloster im Gegensatz zu Studium und Wissenschaft des Klerus an den beruhmten Schulen Frankreichs. Erstmals uberhaupt wird hier ein Uberblick uber die Geschichte der Bibliothek von St. Michael gegeben.
