English summary: In the Middle Ages and in Early Modern Age, the wielding of power depended to a high degree on whether one was related or affiliated to the nobility. For this reason an enormously large number of print works were produced from the late 15th to the late 18th century, which depicted relationships both within and between the individual noble dynasties, either in the form of text or through graphics or images. This catalogue for the exhibition “Wurzel, Stamm, Krone: Furstliche Genealogie in fruhneuzeitlichen Drucken” (root, stock, crown: princely genealogy in print works of the early modern period) not only documents the intellectual sophistication and visual refinement of the over 50 exhibits, but also shows the aesthetic appeal that lies in the combination of documentation and visual design. German description: Die Herrschaftsausubung in Mittelalter und fruher Neuzeit war in hohem Masse mit der Abstammung von und der Zugehorigkeit zu einem Furstenhaus verbunden. Die Verwandtschaftsverhaltnisse des Hochadels waren daher von eminenter politischer Brisanz, und dasselbe gilt auch fur die damit befasste Wissenschaft der Genealogie. Vom spaten 15. bis ins ausgehende 18. Jahrhundert hinein entstand aus diesem Grund eine kaum zu uberblickende Menge einschlagiger Drucke, welche die Beziehungen in und zwischen den einzelnen Herrscherhausern in Textform, als graphisches Schema oder im Bild darstellten. Um die haufig komplizierten Familienverhaltnisse auf einer begrenzten Papier- oder Pergamentflache abzubilden, nutzte die Genealogie ein vertrautes Modell: den Baum in all seinen Variationen, von denen der Stammbaum nur die bekannteste Version ist. Der Katalog zur Ausstellung Wurzel, Stamm, Krone: Furstliche Genealogie in fruhneuzeitlichen Druckwerken dokumentiert nicht nur die intellektuelle Differenziertheit und das darstellerische Raffinement der uber 50 Exponate, sondern auch den asthetischen Reiz, den die Verbindung von Informationsvermittlung und Bildlichkeit ausstrahlt. Zwecke und Anlasse, denen sich die genealogischen Schriften verdanken, geben Aufschluss sowohl uber die Rechtfertigung furstlicher Herrschaft wie auch uber die spatere diesbezugliche Kritik. Daruber hinaus verknupft der Katalog die genealogischen Darstellungen mit der fruhneuzeitlichen Herrschafts-, Wissens- und Medienordnung und vertieft so unsere Kenntnisse von der Bedeutung der Dynastien im vormodernen Europa.
