Heinz Bechert (1932-2005) war von 1965 bis 2000 Professor fuer Indologie an der Universitat Gottingen. Der Buddhismus hat sich im Laufe seiner langen Geschichte ueber den grossten Teil von Sued-, Suedost-, Zentral- und Ostasien ausgebreitet. In grossen Teilen Asiens, vor allem westlich von Indien, ist der Buddhismus durch den Islam, in seinem Ursprungsland Indien selbst durch den Hinduismus verdrangt worden, ist aber heute noch in vielen Landern Asiens die bedeutendste Religion geblieben. In dieser Vielfalt von Kulturen hat sich der Buddhismus dank seiner grossen Anpassungsfahigkeit entwickeln und erhalten konnen. So sucht man an der Oberflache oft vergebens die Einheitlichkeit, die sich in Christentum und Islam in Grundzuegen findet. Gleichwohl gibt es so etwas wie eine “Welt des Buddhismus”, in der gemeinsame Grundsatze Geltung haben. Bechert stellt dies am Beispiel des Theravada-Buddhismus mit seinen Entwicklungen von den Anfangen bis in die Gegenwart meisterlich dar. Der vorliegende Text basiert auf einer in den Jahren 2004 und 2005 von Heinz Bechert an der Universitat Wien gehaltenen Vorlesung, bearbeitet und herausgegeben von Ernst Steinkellner.
