Die Pahlavi-Ubersetzung des Avesta gehorte in den Anfangen der Avesta-Philologie zu deren wichtigsten Hilfsmitteln. Bestimmte Entwicklungen innerhalb der indogermanischen Sprachwissenschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts setzten sie jedoch in ihrem Wert herab und liessen sie weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten. Im 20. Jahrhundert war sie bis in die siebziger Jahre hinein weder als Hilfsmittel der Avesta-Philologie akzeptiert noch ein eigenstandiges Objekt der Forschung. Die Studie von Alberto Cantera versucht nicht nur, die Grunde dieser Entwicklung nachzuzeichnen (Geschichte der Avestaforschung in bezug auf die Pahlavi-Ubersetzung), sondern durch die ausfuhrliche Behandlung wesentlicher, die Pahlavi-Ubersetzung betreffender Probleme (Abastag ud Zand: Das Avesta und dessen Pahlavi-Ubersetzung; Die Uberlieferung des Avesta und dessen schriftliche Fixierung; Zur Datierung der Pahlavi-Ubersetzung des Avesta; Die Ubersetzungstechnik in der Pahlavi-Version des Avesta) die Texte in ihrem Wert zu rehabilitieren. Der Leser erhalt mit dieser Studie einen detaillierten historischen wie systematischen Einblick in den Prozess der Transformation des Avesta in der Sasanidenzeit und der folgenden Jahrhunderte, welcher konstitutiv war fur das Erscheinungsbild des jungeren Zoroastrismus.
