The volume presents original research carried out between 2019 and 2022 in the capital of the Kingdom of Alwa (approx. 6th–16th century). It combines large-scale geophysical surveys with archaeological excavations and ethnological studies. These investigations aimed to understand the spatial organisation of the metropolis, its settlement phases, and its chronology based on radiocarbon dating. The geophysical survey revealed previously unknown city districts, street networks, cemeteries, and traces of gardens. Excavations yielded architectural remains, small finds (pottery, stone, glass, and metal), human remains, faunal material, and organic samples, providing insights that extend beyond the project’s main focus. The results contribute new data on long-distance trade, production techniques, and religions, etc. The volume also includes the first ethnological study conducted in Soba, documenting local perspectives on archaeological heritage shortly before the 2023 conflict. The monograph addresses archaeologists, urban specialists, and researchers working in Africa and beyond.
