And through pain a human being reaches his own limits, be it in relation to himself, to the world or to God. Pain, writes Georg Buchner, tears a rift through creation from top to bottom. In this regard speaking about pain eludes the accepted divisions into subject and object, into part and whole. Besides, pain has no specific location nor is it non-locational. It paralyses and instills passivity, yet it also activates us. It befalls us and is generated, it makes us speechless and blind, and yet it finds expression in words and images.These peculiar contradictions in the experience of pain were the topic of the 126th symposium held by the Evangelische Forschungsakademie January 7 to 9, 2011 in Berlin. In the course of the conference it turned out that dealing with pain as a borderline experience is constitutive not only for the field of medicine but also for philosophy and theology as well as for literature and the arts. German description: Schmerz als Grenzerfahrung heisst auch, dass die Rede vom Schmerz an Grenzen kommt. Mehr noch, im Schmerz gerat der Mensch selber an seine Grenzen, sei es im Verhaltnis zu sich, zur Welt oder aber zu Gott. Der Schmerz, so Georg Buchner, “macht einen Riss in der Schopfung von oben bis unten”. Insofern entzieht sich die Rede vom Schmerz den herkommlichen Ordnungen von Subjekt und Objekt, von Teil und Ganzem. Auch hat der Schmerz keinen bestimmten Ort, noch ist er ortlos. Zwar lahmt er und macht passiv, aber er aktiviert auch. Er widerfahrt und wird erzeugt, er macht sprachlos und blind und findet dennoch Ausdruck in Wort und Bild.Dieser eigentumlichen Widerspruchlichkeit in der Erfahrung des Schmerzes galt die 126. Tagung der Evangelischen Forschungsakademie vom 7. bis 9. Januar 2011 in Berlin. Hierbei zeigte sich, dass der je besondere Umgang mit der Grenzerfahrung des Schmerzes nicht nur fur die Medizin, sondern gleichermassen fur Philosophie und Theologie, wie auch fur Literatur und Kunst schlechthin konstitutiv ist.
