Les editions imprimees, y compris les editions critiques, peuvent donner au lecteur une image trop simple de ce qu’est un texte antique: intuitivement, celui-ci est pense comme la reconstruction aussi fidele que possible d’un archetype d’auteur transmis tant mal que bien par les manuscrits. Lorsque nous lisons une oeuvre antique, nous esperons, a l’aide d’une edition critique qui a fait le travail de discrimination entre la lecon fautive et la lecon d’auteur, lire le texte dans une version proche de celle qui avait ete elaboree par le pere de l’ouvrage. Les problemes dans la transmission des oeuvres ne seraient alors que des accidents dans la vie du texte, qu’on les explique par la maladresse des copistes, par la degradation du support materiel, par des lecteurs interventionnistes trahissant, a la marge, la vocation naturelle de la copie. Mais l’histoire de la transmission des textes antiques est plus complexe qu’il n’y parait. Le present volume souhaite explorer la notion de tradition textuelle comme processus actif qui remet en cause l’integrite du texte, l’unicite de l’auteur et/ou le caractere de paradigme normatif de l’oeuvre recue. La notion d’oeuvre elle-meme s’en trouve alteree, ou plutot doit etre repensee en termes de pluralite textuelle, qui n’est pas necessairement soluble dans un stemma codicum, en particulier pour les textes qui ont fait l’objet d’editions multiples, de versions, de recritures, d’abregements, d’amplifications, de raboutages, d’oralisations concurrentes et/ou d’enrichissements successifs. Les consequences du polymorphisme textuel sont parfois considerables et depassent le cadre etroit du petit monde des philologues. Pour l’amateur de litterature, la mobilite textuelle engage la juste connaissance des auteurs, la nature et l’interpretation de leurs oeuvres. Pour l’historien, elle est la source d’une fragilite documentaire. Pour les croyants de tous horizons, elle est productrice de dissensus, de polemiques, voire d’heresies, jusqu’a ce que, par un acte autoritaire, l’on cache ou l’on arrete la plurification du texte.
