Une étude du syncrétisme religieux en Égypte tardo-antique et médiévale

Aujourd’hui, le corpus des textes magiques coptes compte plus de 500 manuscrits provenant d’Égypte, datés pour la plupart de l’Antiquité tardive et de l’époque médiévale, soit entre le 4e et le 12e siècle de notre ère. Parmi ceux-ci, un petit groupe de vingt-deux textes manuscrits contient des charmes et incantations présentant des invocations à des divinités grecques et égyptiennes ou de cours récits mythologiques les mettant en scène. Ce livre offre la première étude systématique de ce groupe de manuscrits magiques coptes. Il s’intéresse aux processus syncrétiques utilisés par les experts en rituels de ces époques pour s’approprier des éléments appartenant aux cultes traditionnels (noms de divinités, récits mythologiques, images), les adapter et les incorporer dans des textes magiques contenant également des éléments chrétiens. Cette étude contribue donc à nos connaissances concernant la transmission du savoir magique dans l’Antiquité, ainsi que le processus de transformation religieuse dans l’Antiquité tardive et la période médiévale. <br /><br />Today, the corpus of Coptic magical texts consists of over 500 manuscripts, mostly dated to Late-Antique and medieval Egypt (4th-12th centuries). Among those, a small group of twenty-two manuscripts includes charms and spells featuring invocations to Greek and Egyptian deities or narratives featuring them. This book offers the first systematic study of this group of Coptic magical manuscripts. It examines the syncretistic processes used by the ritual experts of these periods to appropriate ancient deities, narratives, and images, adapt them and incorporate them into magical texts containing Christian elements. This study thus sheds light upon the transmission of magic knowledge in Antiquity and the process of religious transformation in Late Antiquity and the medieval period.
