Der Gott Chepri
Untersuchungen zu Schriftzeugnissen und ikonographischen Quellen vom Alten Reich bis in griechisch-römische Zeit

Die vorliegende Studie gilt der umfassenden Dokumentation und Interpretation des altagyptischen Gottes Chepri in allen seinen Manifestationen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Analyse des Kafergottes in seiner Funktion als Sonnen- und Urgottheit vom Alten Reich bis in die romische Zeit. Da er zusammen mit Re und Atum die Dreiphasenkonzeption des taglichen Sonnenlaufs versinnbildlichte, waren diese Gotter beziehungsreich verwoben, doch ist Chepri kaum mythologisch, sondern primar phanomenologisch fassbar. Deshalb war er besonders geeignet, die Wandelbarkeit der Sonnenerscheinung zu reprasentieren und den kosmischen Vorstellungen in der agyptischen Religion Rechnung zu tragen. So wurde er zum Symbol der aufgehenden Sonne und der Regeneration par excellence. Um das Wesen des Gottes, seine Rolle innerhalb des agyptischen Pantheons und seine Bedeutung fur die diesseitige wie jenseitige Welt von Konigen und Privatleuten zu ergrunden, wurden schriftliche und ikonographische Zeugnisse aller Gattungen aus allen Verbreitungsgebieten und Epochen der agyptischen Kultur zusammengestellt und untersucht. Das Material reicht von Pyramidentexten des Alten Reiches bis zu Tempelinschriften der griechisch-romischen Zeit, von Skulpturen, Reliefs und Malereien aus Tempeln und Grabern bis hin zu romischen Mumienmasken. Um dieser ausserst heterogenen Fulle Ordnung und Struktur zu geben, ist das Buch thematisch und chronologisch in neun Kapitel gegliedert. Dabei erhalten neben religionsgeschichtlichen Aspekten stets auch ikonographische Ausdruksformen oder inschriftliche Besonderheiten wie etwa die variationsreiche Schreibung des Gottesnamens Beachtung.
