English summary: The clergy were part of every Christian court in Europe in the early modern age. Confessors, chaplains, teachers, preachers and members of church councils, they were acting in close proximity to the sovereigns and thus at the very center of political power, state representation and the definition of social norms. So far, however, few attempts have been made to shed light on the political role of clerical members of the court based on a regional and denominational approach. The contributions to this anthology assess the background, self-conception and status of the clerical elite as well as their actual power, prerequisites and limitations in their political operations between 1500 and 1800. They largely result from an international seminar at the “Herzog August Bibliothek” (library of Duke August of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel) in the fall of 2011. German description: Geistliche lassen sich an allen christlich gepragten Hofen im Europa der Fruhen Neuzeit finden. Als Beichtvater, Kaplane, Erzieher, Hofprediger und Kirchenrate agierten sie im engsten Umfeld von Furstinnen und Fursten und damit im Zentrum politischer Macht, herrschaftlicher Reprasentation und sozialer Normsetzung. Bislang sind jedoch nur wenige Versuche unternommen worden, die politische Rolle von Hofgeistlichen in einer Regionen und Konfessionen ubergreifenden Herangehensweise zu beleuchten. Die Beitrage des Sammelbands Religion, Macht, Politik, die zum grossen Teil aus einem internationalen Arbeitsgesprach an der Herzog August Bibliothek im Herbst 2011 hervorgegangen sind, fragen nach Herkunft, Selbstverstandnis und Status geistlicher Funktionseliten und nach deren Moglichkeiten, Bedingungen und Grenzen fur politisches Handeln zwischen 1500 und 1800. Einen Schwerpunkt der Betrachtung bildet dabei das variantenreiche Feld lutherischer Territorien, aber es werden auch reformierte, katholische und russisch-orthodoxe Fallbeispiele angefuhrt, die sowohl Parallelen als auch Differenzen sichtbar werden lassen. Die in der Fruhen Neuzeit stets gegenwartige Konversionsproblematik wird dabei ebenfalls in die Uberlegungen miteinbezogen, so dass der Band einen umfassenden Uberblick uber die Hofgeistlichkeit im Europa der Fruhen Neuzeit gibt.
