English summary: This biography offers a number of new insights into the life and work of Friedrich Dedekind (b. 1524 in Neustadt am Rubenberge, d. 1598 in Luneburg) examining his charisma and influence as a theologian as well as his literary productivity by clarifying and examining the exact contours of the scholarly and familiar networks in which Dedekind operated. Dedekind had already became famous while a student of Melanchthon as the author of the frequently published satire “Grobianus: Of Rough Morals and Rude Behavior,” (Grobianus: von groben Sitten und unhoflichen Gebarden) which was originally written in Latin but quickly translated into a number of languages. His learning, even temperament, and diplomatic skill destined him to become a theological counselor and an ecclesiastical administrator. In these latter roles, his writings in various genres contributed to the consolidation of Protestantism in northern Germany. All titles and editions are systematically presented in this biography, and manuscript source titles are presented verbatim. Friedrich Dedekind wrote three “school dramas” that were described by him as spiritual games or comedies, which were performed during on Mardi Gras in the church of St. Michael in Luneburg. Dedekind addressed issues pertaining to Protestant values and norms to his congregation through these plays, in which boys took on the roles portraying representatives of successive generations. Two of these theatrical pieces, “The Christian Knight” and “The Converted Papist” appeared during Dedekind’s lifetime in print. Having fallen into obscurity, the text of the third play is finally published here for the first time and concerns the biblical narrative of the wine-miracle worked by Christ at the wedding in Cana in Galilee. The manuscript of the play is currently housed at the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin. The commentary is concerned with the Protestant teachings on marriage and the reconstruction of the performances in action.
