The De E apud Delphos dialogue is one of the most frequently discussed texts in the works of Plutarch of Chaeronea (45-120 AD), the Greek philosopher and polyhistor. On the assumption that the essence of the god Apollo as an inspirator of philosophy was expressed in the mysterious dedication gift in the form of an E on his temple in Delphi, the possible meanings of the E are debated using philosophical methods in five contributions to the discussion. The answers to pivotal questions about Plutarchs philosophical development, his Platonism, his relationship to the Stoa as well as to his philosophical interpretation of Greek religion depend on the understanding of this dialogue. Tobias Thum provides the first analysis of the entire dialogue in all its literary and philosophical dimensions and gives a coherent new interpretation of Plutarchs conception of the text and its philosophical substance. Der Dialog De E apud Delphos gehort zu den meistdiskutierten Texten des griechischen Philosophen und Polyhistors Plutarch von Chaironeia (ca. 45-120 n. Chr.). Unter der Pramisse, dass sich in dem ratselhaften Weihegeschenk in Form eines E an seinem Tempel in Delphi das Wesen des Gottes Apollon als eines Inspirators zur Philosophie ausdrucke, werden die moglichen Bedeutungen des E in funf Gesprachsbeitragen mit philosophischen Mitteln erortert. Vom Verstandnis dieses Dialoges hangen dabei Antworten auf zentrale Fragen nach Plutarchs philosophischer Entwicklung, seinem Platonismus, seinem Verhaltnis zur Stoa sowie nach seiner philosophischen Deutung der griechischen Religion ab. Tobias Thum analysiert zum ersten Mal den gesamten Dialog in allen seinen literarischen und philosophischen Dimensionen und bietet eine koharente Neudeutung von Plutarchs Konzeption des Textes und seiner philosophischen Substanz.
