English summary: When the so-called Decian persecution of Christians came to an end in the year 251 in Rome, an intra-church drama began to unfold, first causing an uproar in the Roman community and later spreading to all Christians in the Roman Empire. Propagating a “pure” church with no room for sinners, Novatian founded a separate church that quickly drew followers from all over the Roman world. Who were these believers who appear to have influenced the development of Christianity in large parts of western Asia Minor? Their teachings were uncomfortable, strict and rigorous and their perception of God often was considered merciless. Nevertheless, the Novatians had an attractiveness that allowed them to survive despite hostilities and persecutions. Vera Hirschmann investigates why the Novatians were that appealing, consciously avoiding to classify the Novatian Church as a heresy right at the outset, but rather as a real alternative for many Christians. German description: Als in Rom im Jahre 251 die sogenannte decische Christenverfolgung ein Ende fand, begann ein innerkirchliches Drama der zuerst in der romischen Gemeinde, spater aber unter allen Christen in der damaligen Welt Aufruhr schurte. Beseelt von dem Gedanken einer “reinen” Kirche, in der die Sunder keinen Platz mehr haben sollten, grundete Novatian eine Sonderkirche, die schnell im Romischen Reich Anhanger fand. Wer waren diese Glaubigen, die die christliche Entwicklung grosser Teile des westlichen Kleinasiens beeinflusst zu haben schienen? Ihre Lehren waren unbequem, streng und rigoristisch, ihre Auffassung von Gott in den Augen anderer Christen oft unbarmherzig. Dennoch besassen sie eine Attraktivitat, die ihnen (wie lange??) ein Uberleben trotz Anfeindungen und Verfolgungen ermoglicht hatte. Vera Hirschmann spurt dieser Attraktivitat nach und setzt sich mit der Kirche der Novatianer bewusst nicht von vornherein als einer “Haresie”, sondern als einer echten Alternativ e fur viele damalige Christen auseinander.
