Osnabruck hat eine ganz besondere Reformation erlebt, und das kennzeichnet die kirchliche und religiose Atmosphare der Stadt bis heute. Ein Bischof, Franz von Waldeck, hat 1543 die Reformation gewollt und begonnen. Das gab es nur selten. Zwar musste Bischof Franz schon funf Jahre spater, um sich nicht zu gefahrden, alles widerrufen, doch der evangelische Glaube liess sich nicht mehr zuruckdrangen. In Stadt und Land stellten sich gemischtkonfessionelle Verhaltnisse ein, obwohl das Furstbistum wieder offiziell katholisch regiert wurde. Das pragt das Stadtbild mit seinen Kirchen und dem Schloss. In Osnabruck wurde Toleranz praktiziert, als andernorts Menschen wegen ihres Glaubens auswandern mussten. Hundert Jahre spater haben europaische Diplomaten in Osnabruck, wie in Munster, das Ende des Dreissigjahrigen Krieges beschlossen und besiegelt. Anschliessend wechselten sich katholische und evangelische Bischofe in der Regentschaft ab und Osnabruck, eine der beiden Stadte des Westfalischen Friedens, wurde zur Friedensstadt. Mit grossem Engagement fordert die Stadt auf vielen Ebenen ein friedliches Miteinander.
