By (author) J. Descreux
For thirty years, several literary works have attempted to account for the discrepancy between the historical situation of Christians and their literary representation in the book of the Apocalypse. Based on the hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur, this book raises the following question: how does the Apocalypse, by telling a conflict, shape the worldview of its readers? After considering generic conventions and determining the social situation of the churches to which the Apocalypse is addressed, a socio-narrative analysis of the episodes that involve figures of evil will show how the Book (the Apocalypse) persuades its public by constantly threatening their faith.
English summary: For thirty years, several literary works have attempted to account for the discrepancy between the historical situation of Christians and their literary representation in the book of the Apocalypse. Based on the hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur, L’ivresse des nations raises the following question: how does the Apocalypse, by telling a conflict, shape the worldview of its readers? After considering generic conventions and determining the social situation of the churches to which the Apocalypse is addressed, a socio-narrative analysis of the episodes that involve figures of evil will show how the Book (the Apocalypse) persuades its public by constantly threatening their faith.
