Sous le nom d’Hermes Trismegiste (“Hermes le trois fois tres grand”) nous sont parvenus un grand nombre de textes au contenu fort divers, dans lesquels Hermes transmet a l’humanite une revelation salutaire. La personnalite de cet Hermes, la couleur egyptienne de ces textes et leurs enseignements souvent profonds leur ont valu une tres grande celebrite. Il ne faut sans doute pas imaginer qu’ils proviennent d’une secte hermetique, mais on doit considerer qu’ils sont le fruit des meditations d’une fraction du clerge egyptien, demeure obstinement fidele aux enseignements immemoriaux et aux revelations primordiales de l’Egypte. Pour ce volume, on a choisi trois textes parmi les plus importants dans cette immense litterature. Dans le Poimandres, Hermes recoit un enseignement de son maitre Poimandres sur la creation du monde et de l’homme ainsi que sur sa destinee posthume. La Fille du Monde est un ensemble d’enseignements composites, ou la premiere interlocutrice n’est autre que la deesse Isis. Hermes cependant intervient dans le dialogue et transmet un autre recit de creation universelle, tres voisin des cosmogonies egyptiennes. Enfin l’Asclepius (version latine du Discours parfait qui a beaucoup circule au Moyen age) fournit un expose tres complet de la doctrine hermetique.
