C’est en effet en decouvrant et en decryptant un livre fabuleux, Le livre d’Abraham le Juif, que Flamel aurait appris le secret de la pierre philosophale. Desireux de transmettre un si precieux secret, il aurait ensuite compose differents ouvrages, qui comptent parmi les textes fondateurs de l’Alchimie. Le Sommaire philosophique presente les grandes theories de l’Alchimie medievale, suivies, comme il se doit, de l’indispensable partie pratique. Le Livre des figures hieroglyphiques expose l’enseignement secret des figures placees par Flamel sur les arches que, grace a sa fortune, il fit jadis construire a Paris, au cimetiere des Innocents. Cette edition directement fondee sur les textes originaux offre, pour la premiere fois, la totalite de l’oeuvre alchimique de Nicolas Flamel, debarrassee des textes mineurs qui lui furent souvent inutilement adjoints, et qui ne sont que des traductions posterieures de traites d’auteurs plus anciens, composes en latin.
