Gems representing the Mars Ultor type were produced between the 1st and 4th centuries. Scattered around the world, the 240-odd engraved stones gathered here attest to the longevity and impact of the Augustan image in Roman iconography and allow us to follow the variations in meaning of the motif.

Lorsqu’Adolf Furtwangler, a l’occasion de l’etude de la collection Somzee, a determine le type Mars Ultor d’apres une statuette de cette meme collection, il a choisi de ne retenir comme elements de comparaison que deux monuments : la pierre gravee de la collection Marlborough et un sesterce d’Antonin le Pieu. La sculpture monumentale et les reliefs n’ont pas constitue de points d’ancrage fiables du type. Meme la fameuse statue en ronde-bosse du Musee du Capitole n’a pas trouve grace a ses yeux. Paradoxalement, les etudes qui ont suivies celle de Furtwangler se sont focalisees sur les arts majeurs , en laissant de cote intentionnellement les intailles et les pates de verre qui comptent pourtant dans ses rangs les seules exemplaires contemporains de la statue originelle, aujourd’hui perdue. Cet essai consacre principalement aux pierres gravees representants le type Mars Ultor souhaite leur redonner la place qu’elles meritent. Produits entre le Ier siecle et le IVe siecle, ces objets attestent d’abord de la longevite et de l’impact de l’image augusteenne dans l’iconographie romaine et permettent enfin de suivre les variations de signification du motif. Eparpillees aux quatre coins du globe, sans que le contexte n’ait ete documente, les quelques 240 pierres gravees rassemblees ici prouvent – si l’on avait encore besoin de le souligner – que les grands chefs-d’oeuvre de l’histoire de l’art ont eu une survivance bien plus importante sur ces petits objets que sur les grands monuments traditionnellement au centre des etudes iconographiques. La comparaison avec les statuettes et les pieces de monnaies representant le type Mars Ultor offrent egalement une vue historique et religieuse sur le culte de dieu voulu par Octavien apres la bataille de Philippes.
