Les jesuites, contrairement au clerge seculier, se tinrent pendant tout le dix-neuvieme siecle en general loin du mouvement flamand: ce ne fut qu’a la veille de la Premiere Guerre mondiale que naquit un courant flamingant au sein de la Compagnie de Jesus. Ce courant, qui profita de la situation politique en Belgique et atteignit son apogee dans les annees 1920 et 1930, visa avant tout la neerlandisation de la vie jesuite en Flandre. Mais plutot que de mener leur combat dans les limites de leurs communautes et de leurs colleges, les jesuites flamingants l’etendirent a la societe flamande tout entiere. Des avant 1914, quelques membres de la Compagnie oeuvrerent a la constitution d’une ideologie catholique du flamingantisme. Cette ideologie presentait la lutte en faveur de la langue, de la culture et de la nation flamandes comme faisant partie d’une autre lutte: celle pour la sauvegarde de la foi catholique en Flandre. Les jesuites flamingants en vinrent finalement a lier si etroitement le catholicisme au nationalisme, que leurs adversaires leur reprocherent de faire passer le politique avant le religieux, a la maniere de Charles Maurras et de son mouvement d’Action francaise. Tel ne fut pas le cas: leur objectif premier etait bien de restituer la Flandre au Christ. Il n’en est pas moins vrai que cet objectif dont l’accomplissement, a leur avis, necessitait la disparition de l’Etat belge, les poussa ipso facto a l’activite politique, activite politique qu’ils menerent principalement par la voie des fideles. Ceux-ci, avance la conclusion de cette etude, en furent rapproches du national-socialisme, de la collaboration et de la secularisation.
