C’est au coeur de l’Afghanistan central que la tour edifiee par le sultan Ghiyath al-din et miraculeusement preservee dresse ses 65 m de briques a la decoration precieuse. Si quelques publications avaient aborde ce monument du XIIe siecle, redecouvert il y a moins de cinquante ans, Mme Janine Sourdel-Thomine nous en livre avec ce volume la premiere monographie, abondamment illustree. S’appuyant sur les resultats de l’expedition menee en 1960 par la Delegation archeologique francaise en Afghanistan (DAFA), l’auteur dresse d’abord l’etat des lieux. Le minaret de Jam – du nom du village actuel dont il est le plus proche – est situe dans la haute vallee de Heri Roud. Noeud de circulation, convergence de vallees, lieu desertique mais jadis habite et fortifie, existence d’une cite ayant une valeur strategique au point que certains crurent y reconnaitre Firuzkuh, la capitale du pouvoir ghouride, l’auteur analyse tous ces elements pour tenter de degager une identification historique. La structure de l’edifice et l’organisation de l’ornement font l’objet du deuxieme chapitre, avant que l’auteur n’etudie en detail les decors architectoniques, les medaillons en relief, l’ecriture monumentale et les particularites stylistiques des diverses inscriptions, puis les stylisations florales et les entrelacs geometriques. La derniere partie du volume est consacree aux inscriptions du minaret: les cinq larges bandeaux ceinturant l’edifice a differentes hauteurs; celles dissimulees dans le decor et revelant la date et la signature du maitre d’oeuvre; et enfin, le galon epigraphique ornemental entrelace sur les huit faces de la partie basse du minaret, portant le texte de la sourate XIX du Coran, ou sourate Maryam. Dedie a la memoire de Daniel Schlumberger et de Marc Le Berre, l’ouvrage de Mme Sourdel-Thomine fait ainsi le point sur ce monument colossal et raffine; par la-meme il nous apprend beaucoup sur la puissance et le prestige de la courte mais brillante dynastie ghouride dont il demeure le symbole le plus eclatant.
