Through eight archaeological sites, this volume sketches a picture of the eastern part of the historical province of Ayrarat. For each site, the study is based on unpublished survey work, supplemented by stratigraphic soil surveys, a re-examination of literary and epigraphic sources and, where possible, by consulting archives.
Through eight archaeological sites, this volume sketches a picture of the eastern part of the historical province of Ayrarat. The history of these marsh lands is dominated by the opulent city of Ani. Today located in Turkey, it has been the focus of attention of researchers since the end of the 19th century. The French archaeological mission whose work is presented here studied the heritage of this region for seven years, finding varied and complex sites with defensive, religious, economic, and residential buildings. Mainly active from the 10th to the beginning of the 14th century, they frequently incorporate monuments that predate the Arab conquest of Armenia in the 7th century. For each site, the study is based on unpublished survey work, supplemented by stratigraphic soil surveys, a re-examination of literary and epigraphic sources and, where possible, by consulting archives.
