Edited by S.H. Aufrère Edited by C. Spieser
This publication addresses the particular relationship between the ancient Egyptians and the arthropod world, object of fear and veneration. The gathered studies target species linked to deities capable of thwarting their venom or curing its effects (scorpions, millipedes), species carrying parasitic diseases such as malaria or leishmaniasis (mosquitoes and phlebotomines), and species with remarkable anatomical and ethological characteristics from a conceptual point of view (scorpion, scarab beetle and Lanelater of Neith). A part of this approach is devoted to necrophages, as well as to the medicinal-magical use of arthropods in the medical corpus of classical Egypt and the pharmacopoeia of Greco-Roman Egypt.
