Was ist Krankheit? Und wie deutlich grenzen sich christliche Vorstellungen von den uberkommenen Vorstellungen der vorchristlichen Antike ab? Wolfgang Hafele untersucht die Wunder der Heiligen Kyros und Johannes, die der spatere Patriarch Sophronios von Jerusalem zwischen 610 und 614 verfasst hat. Ihnen wird eine besonders feindselige Haltung gegenuber Arzten und der Medizin nachgesagt. Zu Unrecht, wie sich zeigt: Sophronios kritisiert den Habitus der dann selbst christlichen Elite der Arzte zwar tatsachlich ausgesprochen scharf. Zugleich schatzt er die Moglichkeiten der zeitgenossischen Medizin uberraschend hoch ein. Er greift wie selbstverstandlich auf Erklarungsansatze der zeitgenossischen Medizin zuruck, wenn er Leiden beschreibt. Vor allem bei den Leiden der Seele wird dann aber auch eine zweite Dimension deutlich, die die Wundersammlung durchzieht: Krankheit und ihre Behandlung als Metaphern.
